1. They Simply Don’t Grip
Tyres should provide you with a secure grip on the road, regardless of whether they are new or used.
Sometimes, even brand-new Tyres can feel like you’re driving on ice, despite the road being perfectly dry.
The primary function of Tyres is to ensure you feel safe while driving. Summer-only Tyres, for instance, will not perform well in wintery conditions, even when they are brand new.
If your current Tyres do not provide the grip you need to feel confident, it’s crucial to change them.
2. An Ill-Placed Puncture
Most punctures in the tread section can be repaired using a combination plug-patch, the only approved repair method according to the Tire Industry Association.
However, some punctures occur in areas that flex too much, such as near the shoulder or in the sidewall, making them unsafe to repair.
Punctures larger than ¼-inch in diameter or close enough that the patches will overlap are also not repairable. A puncture in the wrong place condemns a tire to replacement.
3. The Tread is Worn Down
The most common indicator for needing new Tyres is tread depth. Your car should always have at least 2/32nds of an inch of tread depth remaining in all sections of the tire—more is even better.
This measurement is taken from the wear bars, small sections between tread blocks that are raised slightly.
Measure across the tread and around the circumference. If your tread is at or below 2/32nds, it’s time to replace the Tyres.
4. Uneven Tread Wear
Mechanical issues can significantly affect your car’s Tyres. If the alignment is out of spec, there are loose steering parts, or you have worn suspension components, it can put added strain on your Tyres or change the angle at which they contact the road.
You may notice that the inside or outside shoulder has much more wear than the centre tread section, or a condition known as feathering, where the tread blocks wear in an odd shape.
Over-inflated or under-inflated Tyres can also cause uneven tread wear, affecting the centre section or the shoulders respectively.
5. Bulges or Cuts
While nicks and scratches in the rubber are no big deal, a bulge or a cut is a significant concern.
A bulge occurs when air gets between the inner liner and the outer rubber layers, usually caused by a curb impact or a severe pothole.
Cuts can result from road debris or vandalism, and a cut that’s deeper than the outer layer is too deep to drive on safely.
6. Cracks Between Tread Blocks
As Tyres age, the rubber dries out and cracks may appear. These cracks, often referred to as dry-rot, are normal to see as fine lines between the tread blocks, on the shoulder, and on the sidewalls.
They are primarily caused by the sun’s UV rays. When these cracks widen to the point where you can either peel bits of rubber off or insert the ballpoint of a pen into them, the tire should definitely be replaced.
7. Steel or Fabric Cords Are Showing
Inside your tire, materials like Kevlar, cotton, or synthetic fabric strands help it maintain its shape and reinforce its strength.
Steel cords are crucial for maintaining the tire’s shape and providing rigidity in key areas like the bead.
These are structural components, and if you can see them, there is a significant problem with the tire.
This indicates that you have already missed earlier warning signs and that the tire is in a dangerous, unsafe condition to drive on.
8. They’re Expired
Did you know that Tyres have an expiry date? Tyres “expire” six years after their manufacture date. On the sidewall of every tire, you’ll find a four-digit number near the bead.
The first two digits represent the week of manufacture during the year, and the last two digits represent the year it was made.
For example, a manufacture code of 2719 indicates the tire was made the 27th week of the year, likely the first week of July, of 2019.
If your Tyres are more than six years past their manufacture date, it’s time to consider replacing them.
